New dog registration

In Western Australia, all dogs over three months of age must be registered with a Local Government. The City promotes responsible ownership of dogs in our community and our Rangers ensure dogs are registered and microchipped. All dog owners must comply with the Dog Act 1976.

Please note, dog registration period ends on October 31 of the year of expiry.

See below to register your dog or transfer your dog registration to the City of Swan online. You can do it in person at the City's Main Administration Centre, or any City of Swan Library.

1. Before you start

Make sure you have your microchip details available

You will need to enter the following microchip details:

  • Microchip database company
  • Microchip number

All dogs aged three (3) months or over must be microchipped unless they have an exemption. 

Make sure you have your credit card with you.

You can register a maximum of 2 dogs at one time

  • If more than 2 dogs over 3 months of age are at the premises an excess dog permit is required
  • You can register a maximum of two dogs. Any additional dogs can only be registered once a permit is approved.  

Have a copy/photo of your Sterilisation Certificate to upload.

2. Register and pay online

Please select the length of time you wish to register your dog(s) for. The link will open a form, so you can begin your registration.

Please note: The first address you enter in the form is the location where your dog will be kept.

^registration between June 1 and October 31 will be reduced to half price - applicable to new registrations for one year (expires October 2024) only. Payment for the new registration period can be accepted from October 10.

*If your dog is sterilised and you wish to claim the relevant discount, you must provide one of the following:

  • Veterinary surgeon’s certificate
  • Signed Statutory Declaration
  • Authorised Officer sighting ear tattoo 

Please note: previous registration certificates are not acceptable as proof of sterilisation.


3. Receive your tag

Once your dog has been registered and the fee has been processed, a tag number is usually issued within 24 hours. You will then be sent the tag by post.

To be eligible for a 50 per cent concession, pensioners must produce one of the following:

  • Pensioner Concession Card
  • Veteran Affairs Card
  • Commonwealth Seniors Health Card together with a Seniors Card
  • State Concession Card.

As well as your microchip and credit card details, you will also need:

  • A copy/photo of your Sterilisation Certificate to upload
  • A copy/photo of your concession card (showing both front and back of the card)

Working dog

As well as your microchip and credit card details, you will also need:

A document/proof the dog is being kept as a working dog*

An dog classified as a working dog is generally one used to work with live stock

Assistance dog

*To be eligible for a 100 per cent discount, you must provide proof your dog is kept as an assistance dog. This should include proof of training.
