The Swan State Emergency Service (SES) marked its diamond anniversary on Saturday, May 18 with an event celebrating the volunteers who provide extraordinary support to the community.

For 60 years, the unit has been on-call as a first responder to emergencies including floods, cyclones, earthquakes, storms and tsunamis.

They also play a big part in helping with bushfires in the City of Swan and wider metropolitan area.

The City has been proud to support the vital service, which is co-located at the City’s emergency services facility in Middle Swan.

The community was invited to enjoy a family day at the facility where they had the opportunity to meet the SES volunteers and thank them for their service.

Many emergency service representatives – including those from other SES units, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, RAC, Australian Red Cross, West Swan Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade and Bullsbrook Volunteer Fire and Emergency Services – hosted stalls at the event, giving attendees a behind-the-scenes look at the services they deliver.

Tanya Richardson, City of Swan Mayor, said the day was filled with joy and gratitude as Swan residents and visitors connected with local heroes.

“Members of the Swan SES have put their hands up for six decades to keep our community safe in the most challenging situations,” she said.

“We’d like to take this opportunity to thank them for their service and we’re excited to continue supporting them into the future.

Daryl Coleman, Swan SES Unit Manager, expressed his appreciation to his team and their supporters.

“I’m so proud of this unit and the support they offer the community in times of great need,” he said.

“I’d also be remiss if I didn’t thank the families and friends who support our volunteers when they return from testing shifts – it is you who helps us do what we do.”

The SES is always looking for more volunteers. Express your interest by emailing the Swan SES recruitment officer at info@swanses.org.au.
