FOGO has arrived in Swan, with Ballajura residents the first to receive the new service set to boost sustainability across the City.
Each year, homes across the City put about 850kg of waste in their general waste bin, and more than half of that is organic material.
Under the new system, starting this week, that organic material will go in the FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics) bin so it can be recovered and reused.
Swan has joined a growing number of WA local governments to introduce FOGO in line with WA Waste Authority guidelines.
“We’re excited to be introducing FOGO to our City,” Tanya Richardson, City of Swan Mayor said.
“FOGO will be a part of a new three-bin kerbside collection system that will take organic nutrients out of the general waste stream and return them to our soils as compost.
“This new system aligns with the State Government’s Waste Strategy, and more importantly, it will protect our natural environment for future generations.”
FOGO will be introduced in 11 stages from 2024 to 2027 for properties that pay the City’s standard kerbside waste service charge.
Residents and business owners will receive a letter in the lead-up to their stage of the rollout, explaining how they will make the transition to the new three-bin system.
They will have to leave their general waste bin on the kerb during their transition period.
During this period, they will receive a new red-lid general waste bin and a 7L kitchen caddy, while their old general waste bin will get a new lime green FOGO lid.
The introduction of FOGO is being staggered over three years to make sure community members receive high-quality customer service throughout the rollout.
“Our City covers almost 20 per cent of the metropolitan area and we want to make this transition as smooth as possible,” Mayor Richardson said.
