Creating an inclusive sensory environment with Quiet Hour

We're excited to introduce Quiet Hour in the City of Swan.

The initiative, which is popular in shopping centres across the nation, is coming to the City to support our community members with diverse needs.

For 60 minutes every Monday between 3-4pm and Wednesday 12noon-1pm, Beechboro Library will transform into a low-sensory environment, creating a welcoming, safe and comfortable space.

While libraries are typically a quiet place, our staff will go the extra mile to to provide a calming sensory experience.

During the quiet hours we'll ask library users to:
  • Keep voices low
  • Take phone calls outside the library
  • Use headphones for all devices
  • Avoid noisy activities
  • Be respectful of Quiet Hour and other library users.

Our staff will:
  • Turn down phones and PC notifications
  • Reduce movement in the space
  • Keep conversations low to maintain a relaxed environment
  • Encourage patrons to comply with the Quiet Hour rules.

We appreciate our community's cooperation in creating a peaceful and inclusive space. If this initiative proves successful, the City will consider extending the program to additional libraries.
